Has anyone done a study seeing how often a paper was liked and retweeted and how many cites it has a few years later?

Economist on "How to tackle emotional toll of rejections in academia"

$

I will be in job market next year. I have wondered how people handle emotional stress that come with continuous rejections from conferences, journals in our profession. Unlike most other professions, academic research is a profession of continuous rejection. We get rejected from conferences and of course from journals, We are criticized in seminars despite doing the best possible job.

Now, like most of you, I have always had great academic success until now. But research is completely different and all our colleagues who are competing for space in journals and conferences are also super-smart people. As a result, getting rejected is the normal thing, that's what one expects in this profession.

How do people cope with this? I have always had trouble coping with rejections. In fact I have not submitted two of my working papers yet because I fear that they will be rejected. A life of continuous rejections seems very scary to me but I am really passionate about research. And that's the scarier part, the more passionate one is about one's research, the more likely it will hurt when one's work is rejected.

The AER to AEJ Fast track route was offered to me three times now. First time turnaround was 5 months, second time 4,5 months and this time it's already 6 months. Am I an outlier or is the fast track always that slow?

Does having designations like CFA or affliation from top b school help in getting past desk rejects at a minimum? Does it increase acceptance possibility of your paper?

What is the difference between using FMB double clustered by firm and date and FMB with Newey-West corrected standard errors? In addition to the control for cross-sectional autocorrelation, which is addressed via FMB, I thought both correct for time series autocorrelation and I don’t see the difference between both uses. Thanks!

Instead of the traditional characterization (top 5, top field, etc.), why not use natural cutoff points? Consider the IDEAS 10-Yr recursive discounted rankings (excluding survey journals and moving AER to #5):

1 The Quarterly Journal of Economics, Oxford University Press 10.889
2 Journal of Political Economy, University of Chicago Press 6.209
3 Econometrica, Econometric Society (also covers Econometrica, Econometric Society ) 4.568
4 Review of Economic Studies, Oxford University Press 4.557
5 American Economic Review, American Economic Association 3.191

6 American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, American Economic Association 4.136
7 American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, American Economic Association 3.521
8 Journal of Finance, American Finance Association 3.226
9 Journal of Monetary Economics, Elsevier (also covers Carnegie-Rochester Conference Series on Public Policy, Elsevier ) 3.177
10 The Review of Economics and Statistics, MIT Press 3.134

11 Journal of Labor Economics, University of Chicago Press 2.881
12 American Economic Journal: Economic Policy, American Economic Association 2.831
13 Journal of Human Resources, University of Wisconsin Press 2.717

20 Economic Journal, Royal Economic Society (also covers Economic Journal, Royal Economic Society ) 2.131

Apart from AEJ: Macro (Factor > 4), there are natural cutoffs for the top 5, top 10, and top 20

When you submit to PNAS, do you get updates when it passes from the editorial board to the lead editor? Or does it go direct from editorial board to reviewers? Anyway do you get emails after each step? I submitted something two weeks ago, was under the impression that PNAS was pretty quick.

Anyone care to share their experiences?

my papers.

The first one, I wrote to the editors about the mistake made by the referee/AE in understanding a key theorem in my work. They acknowledged their mistake (it took them two weeks to re-read the paper and accept their mistake) and asked for a revision. The original review had taken 4 months. The current revision has been under review for 4 months.

Another paper of mine came back after 8 months with another wrong-review based rejection. The Associate Editor relied on a referee would did not understand another of my proofs.

I carefully wrote up a polite note pointing out explicitly why my method would work and the flaws in the reasoning of the referee/AE. I have asked the Editor in Chief to get in touch with the AE to see if something can be done.

It is effing depression.

Economist on "Where to find a list of recent published papers by school?"

For instance, in Finance, I know I can see how many papers were published this year by each school (UTD Ranking), but is there a place I can filter and see which papers were published and their authors?

I know I could just look into the best journals and handmade it but... doesn't worth all the time spent.

Economist on "Master thesis plagiarized, student gets to rewrite"

$

Timeline:
Early spring 2013: Dmitry Mitrofanov gets admitted to Kellogg PhD in Accounting program, accepts.
August 2013: Slon.ru, russian news website, publishes a story about Mitrofanov's thesis, including some pictures from it. A number of alumni recognize the pictures from the thesis of Ekaterina Volkova, NES graduate of 2012. NES master theses are not publicly available, but are available to students. Both theses of Mitrofanov and Volkova are extracted and compared by a few of NES alumni working in academia, including Volkova. Besides verbatim copying from Volkova, copying from Terrence Odean and Wikipedia are found. Volkova emails a complaint to NES.
September 2013: NES says that since Mitrofanov made his own regression on data from Volkova, he gets to rewrite the thesis until December 2013, informs Kellogg.

I am posting this is because Mitrofanov will get away with it if I don't. Whether I post this or not, Kellogg is unlikely to do anything, since Mitrofanov is not stripped of the degree. But now, most likely, Mitrofanov will get his master in accountancy degree from Kellogg and go to industry.

I hope I discouraged at least some future attempts of plagiarism.
