If you paper gets lots of cites, it simply means that it was incomplete, otherwise why would so many others either be continuing on the same subject or commenting on your treatment of it. However, if your paper has no cites at all (like many of mine) that means you've put the subject to bed so-to-speak. In other words you have completed research on the topic and therefore there is no further need for any other researchers to continue - it would simply be a waste of time. Why doesn't academia recognize this truth and instead reward numerous citations?
