Suppose you've convinced yourself you've written a paradigm-shifting paper for your subfield of economics. Which of these three outlets {QJE, AER, Econometrica} is the best place to send it?
As much as I adore the journal, I'm not considering JPE because none of the papers in my field have ever been published there, and because I have heard it can be slow (I have no personal experience with them). I'm not considering ReStud as a first choice because it's at the bottom of the top 5 as I understand it.
Of the three, QJE is by far the fastest, and I get more or less instant gratification as desk rejects happen within 24 hours. But I've seen people on these boards argue that QJE isn't as good as an AER or Econometrica. If you wrote what you believe to be an excellent paper of general interest, where would you send it?
