Face it. There are a limited number of spots in the top journals. We are all competing for those spots. If their paper gets in, then that's one less spot for yours. There is always a reason to reject. Start by writing your letter to the editor recommending rejection. Then skim the paper for anything to support your position. That is the optimal response.
